Supress leftmost column in table view

Is there a way of hiding the leftmost column of a table (the one that contains the row number or, in aggregated views, the number of rows aggregated in the current line)?

It's often useful to have, but I have a couple of situations where I'd really like not to see it. I can't hide it as I would another column and I can't find a setting that would get rid of it. Is there a way of doing this?

Thanks, Thomas - that's just what I was looking for. I'll bear your suggestion about colouring rows in mind.
