Security: Time limiting files?
  • Paul April 20, 2011 12:27PM
Using the Professional version, is it possible to set an expiration date for a file such that it won't open after a specified date/ I'd like to send a potential client a file but wouldn't like them to have usage of it forever.

Hi Paul - You can only time-limit files w/ the Server edition of Omniscope. Here's a passage re: Server features...

"Includes automated, personalised batch reporting and offers Publishers advanced file security and revenue protection features like time-limiting, server-authentication, domain locking (files open only if client is also logged into Publisher's specified website/domain) and even 'walled gardens' limiting files to opening only in specific Omniscope installations."

I'm having a think re: alternatives that might work for you.

    Hi James,

That's really useful info - thank you. If you come up with a solution (that doesn't involve a hefty licence upgrade), it would be great to hear it.

    Cheers

Hi James/Paul, I'm just wondering the same, because we want to be able to give people a demo file, but one that will "self destroy" so to speak after 1 month...
would be interested to hear of any ideas available to a desktop licence holder!

    Thanks

    Elite, Paul et. al

From today, we have decided to make time-limiting files a standard Desktop feature. Just refresh your activation to enable this formerly Server-only feature in your Desktop installations.

Ideally, Omniscope IOK files in circulation would always be auto-refreshing and never go out of date and promulgate stale data. Realistically, however, we recognise that sometimes the source data in the timeslice/snapshot file cannot be kept up to date, sometimes file recipients do not have permissioned, secure pathways to refresh, and sometimes the analyst only wants to provide a short-term use 'taster' in order to market their files. For these and other reasons, we have made this change.

"this tape will self-destruct in 60 seconds..."
