Hi, we are investigating the possibilities of using Omniscope online with the Java webstart functionality. Can you please help us with the question we have below?
1. Some clients need their company Admin to install Omniscope. Will Omniscope online require this as well or is it a different install type?
2. We understand from the knowledge base that the java webstart starts Omniscope Viewer (online) and runs an iok file at the same time. Is the iok file stored on our server or should it be stored on the Visokio server?
3. Can we customize the button on shape, colour, name etc? We probably will label the buttons by the name of the iok.
4. Can you have multiple buttons on one page?
5. Is there a relation with the outside browser? When does one use the outside browser?
6. Launching the iok via the web start means that the data travels over the internet. Can you tell us something about the data security?
7. Is Omniscope Enterprise edition required to use Java web start?
8. Is a Windows server required for using the Java web start?
9. We are testing the functionality currently. The file is stored on our server and after entering the filelocation in the Link Builder, the button is created. Hitting the button launches Omniscope Viewer (online) and throws the following error message The file is corrupt and cannot be opened. Can you please help?
Omniscope Online is a standard use of Java Web Start technology that does not require the person clicking on your web page link to have privileges to install anything...their version of Java (already installed on 98% of machines) handles this. Currently, when users press your download or launch JNLP link, the copy of the Viewer is delived from our server (where we keep it updated) and the copy of the payload IOK file to be opened is delivered from your server. Please contact us to discuss button and Viewer customisation options, and yes, you can have any number of JNLP launch buttons to deliver any number of different files. There is no relationship between the Omniscope Online Web Start deployment option and using the Outside browser option...the Outside Browser option allows users to browse a collection of server-based files in an HTML-rendering browser before Omniscope has opened any file.
Delivering an IOK file over the open web is compact and very secure, because the IOK file is inherently compressed and obfuscated/encrypted in a proprietary way, so opening the file to get the data without using an Omniscope would be very time consuming and challenging to say the least. In addition, all sorts of Omniscope file security options are available, such as server authentication, domain locking, time limiting and even good old passwords will prevent anyone using an Omniscope who obtains the file from gaining unauthorised access to the data.
An Enterprise Edition is not required to post a link to an IOK file for Web Start deployment. A Windows server is currently required to activate an Enterprise. We do not currently support activation of any Omniscope Edition on Linux ...it is currently Viewer only, although this will change.
Regarding the error message, can you contact us on that? We need to know what versions of Java are involved, and see a copy of the IOK file.
The error is gone, we solved it already. The link to our server was incorrect.
we are now testing possibilities and will contact you when we want to customize the button.
