This is a good idea. At the moment when you change the configuration of the database block the preview data disappears. This is because the preview data is no longer accurate.

One solution here would be to continue to show the preview data, but to indicate that it is "stale" - it no longer represents the configuration specified inside the block. We intend to make a number of changes/tweaks to DataManager in the next few months, so this is something we will discuss and try out.

An interim solution to your problem would be to create a duplicate of the block and to use that to reference the data table fields/values while you are editing the SQL in the other block.
